Team
The Mindfulness and Health Institute (MHI) works with experienced instructors that teach from their own personal mindfulness practice. We believe that building the capacity to be present with others starts with ourselves. We are committed to bringing mindfulness, curiosity, and care to our work.
Instructors and Staff
Our instructors have extensive knowledge of mindfulness and long-term personal mindfulness practices. “Living into” the courses they teach, MHI instructors can help lead students on a journey of their own wisdom in wakefulness and skilled action. Research has shown mindfulness courses provide tools that improve wellbeing and help to alleviate suffering.
Jon Aaron, SEP
Certified MBSR instructor and MBSR teacher trainer
Insight Meditation Teacher
Somatic Experiencing Practitioner
Jon Aaron first came across meditation in the 1970s, and then became involved with the Insight Meditation community in the late 1990s, studying mindfulness meditation and Buddhism, which have since become central to my life. Along the way, I was asked to become a Practice Leader. I started formally training to teach, both in Buddhist contexts and in secular mindfulness programs such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Breathworks. I had no plan, things just unfolded as I increasingly turned towards what was life-giving and meaningful.
I have now taught over 100 cycles of the seminal MBSR curriculum, and am supporting MBSR teachers-in-training in the US, and more recently in Hungary and Japan. To deepen my understanding of this work as it relates to trauma, I have also trained at the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, and completed their 3 year professional training.
I continue to be nourished by the Dharma and teach at the New York Insight Meditation Center, and at the Makom Meditation Havurah program at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan.
My primary Dharma teacher has been Matthew Flickstein with whom I studied Buddhist meditation in the Theravada and non-dual traditions. I has the chance to undertake the wonderful the Integrated Study and Practice Program at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, as well as the Foundations in Buddhist Contemplative Care program with the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care. Recently, I completed a two-year Dharmapala training program with Thanissara and Kittisaro of the Sacred Mountain Sangha.
Before turning to teaching full-time I was an agent and producer in the performing arts for over 30 years.

Kathleen Beck-Coon, MD
Interpersonal Mindfulness Teacher
Mindfulness Researcher
Certified MBSR Teacher Trainer
“Mindfulness practice saved my life.” When I first heard Jon Kabat-Zinn say this, I will admit to thinking this might be a touch of hyperbole. But I get it now. As a physician practicing women’s health for 28 years with a sudden injury requiring seven months in bed, there was plenty of time to consider where energy might be directed for integrative health and well-being. As mindfulness meditation practice was the underpinning of my healing, Jon’s words rang true. The journey of practice that is teaching MBSR and mentoring MBSR teachers continues to undergird healing and direct how to meet individual and institutional suffering.
Always a beginner, I have practiced meditation in some form since 1979; insight/mindfulness practice since 1992; interpersonal mindfulness practice since 2006; and participated in regular silent teacher-lead retreats of 5-28 days since 2004. Learning as practice is continually on-going and includes MBSR teacher and MBSR teacher trainer certification through the Center for Mindfulness in Healthcare, Medicine and Society at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine (CFM) and the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, Interpersonal Mindfulness teacher, certified mindfulness-based birthing and parenting teacher, and mindfulness-based research intervention developer and teacher. I am deeply grateful for my many teachers, past and present, who skillfully embody and open-heartedly teach this practice including, over the years, my partner, mindfully-gifted children and grandchildren, and numerous students who teach me in-kind.
While practice is the pathway, it is important to understand the who, how, and why mindfulness serves mind-body healing when looking at how mindfulness might be supported in a wider context. Since 2005 I have been privileged to work with a wonderful team at Indiana University (IU) as a research intervention developer and teacher looking at mindfulness-based group work to ameliorate suffering in cancer survivors with cancer-related fatigue, fear of recurrence, and end of life communication between patients and their families. At IU, through the Healthy IU Workplace Wellness Program, I developed The Mindful Way to Stress Reduction and Personal Resiliency for faculty and staff. As an educator, I co-authored a chapter in Reflective Practice on mindful learners and educators in nursing education. And in the recent complexity of stressors in healthcare related to COVID-19, supporting healthcare providers through the Indiana State Medical Association with short mindfulness practices has been meaningful and humbling.
Teaching and teacher training is a practice of mutual learning through compassion, humor, care, and inclusivity. Exploring and deepening how mindfulness opens the door to reducing suffering and increasing joy in walking the entire path of life one moment at a time is where I continue to learn with gratitude.

She has taught over 40 Mindfulness-Based courses (MBSR & MBCT) in person and online, to students ranging in age from 21 to 84.
Janet began her first-person investigation of meditation at age 16 when she enrolled in a course in Transcendental Meditation in her hometown of Kansas City. Ten years later, she fell in love with yoga, as well as the Japanese martial art of Aikido and sword training. Soon after reading Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book on MBSR, “Full Catastrophe Living,” she began the practice of mindfulness meditation. Her work today emerges directly from four decades of personal practice, investigation, and study, as well as the privilege of offering these practices to others. Her daily teachers include her two children, ages 21 and 26, her husband of 27 years, and the newest member of the family: Sammie the Rescue Pup.
Abraham Dejene, MPH
Certified MBSR instructor with an emphasis in underserved/marginalized communities
Yoga instructor
MPH with a concentration in “Mindfulness”
Ever since I can remember, a part of me was highly drawn towards a spiritual existence, but I lived unconsciously for most of my life due to my deep conditioning.
My turning point wasn’t some significant loss or tragedy; it was the opposite. After navigating life in America as an Ethiopian immigrant and overcoming the challenges of being a young black man in the inner city (Roxbury), I obtained my MBA and started a promising career. What I thought would be the pinnacle of my life had left me feeling wholly depleted, empty, and without a sense of purpose.
In 2016 I decided to give it all up, quit my job, sold my belongings, and started backpacking through Southeast Asia. Over the next three years, I was exposed to Buddhist and Yogic Philosophy. Through my meditation and Yoga practice, I have attained a sense of stillness and contentment that would never be possible through any external stimulations or achievements. The minimalist way of living abroad has also followed me back home to the US and has allowed me to live a life where I spend most of my time “being” rather than “having” or “doing.”
My experiences and spiritual practices abroad were something I wanted to share with my community. Upon reestablishing back in the United States, I decided that becoming a Yoga Teacher would be a great avenue to engage with my community. After receiving a scholarship from the Yoga Diversity Initiative (YDI), I attended a 200-Hour teacher training at JP Center Yoga in 2019. Since graduating in June of 2019, I have had several opportunities to be of service in low-income/underserved communities in Boston. I have taught in Boston public schools, Juvenile Detention Centers, and cancer survivors at Boston Medical center.
I am currently enrolled in an MPH program at Brown University with a concentration in “Mindfulness” and received my MBSR teacher training at the Mindfulness Center at Brown.
In collaboration with the Mindfulness Center at Brown, I am also working on initiatives to bring more diversity to the Yoga and Mindfulness space, address social justice issues, and cultivate a welcoming and safe space for people of color.

Carol M. Greco, PhD
Professor and mindfulness researcher
Certified MBSR instructor and MBSR teacher trainer
Clinical Psychologist
Early in my career as a clinical psychologist and mind-body medicine researcher, I met Jon Kabat-Zinn at a scientific conference. I was intrigued at the idea that meditation could help my patients and research participants with chronic pain and chronic illness. Lucky for me, I had to become the ‘scientist of my own experience’ before even considering introducing my patients to meditation. This means, finding teachers and learning to meditate, maintaining a regular practice, and going on retreats. Not easy, time-wise, since I had young children and a full-time academic job! Well worth the effort, however, because I was able to discover, for myself, the personal benefits of meditation, which have been life-changing.
Meditation has felt like coming home, almost from the very beginning. After about 10 years of Zen and Vipassana practice, I began the MBSR teacher training pathway. Since 2005, I’ve been teaching MBSR at the UPMC Center for Integrative Medicine and have mentored several other teachers there. As a clinical scientist and educator, I have also mentored numerous students over the years in a variety of disciplines such as dental medicine, bioengineering, rehabilitation science, nursing, education, palliative care, and psychology.
As a researcher and mindfulness teacher, I’ve been able to help advance the science of meditation. One set of research projects I was involved with found an adapted MBSR program to be helpful for older adults with chronic pain. Another project I worked on found links between participants’ changes in the brain and reduction in their levels of inflammatory biomarkers after a meditation program.
I am also very curious about measuring mindfulness in research. How can something that is so personal and nuanced be measured? I have a research project underway with a colleague in Chicago to create precise self-report questionnaires to measure this elusive concept, mindfulness. Wish us luck!
Cara Geary, MD, PhD
Neonatologist
Professor, Director of the Physician Healer Scholarly Concentration
Zen Teacher and Certified MBSR Teacher Trainer
Zen meditation is where Cara developed the capacity to be with suffering she was seeing in the world of Neonatology and learning that this was not separate from the suffering within herself. She completed teacher training in MBSR in 2008 and published a study on the impact of MBSR training in stressed healthcare providers. She went on to a wide array of other trainings.
These included Non-Violent Communication, Naikan, Family Constellation, Internal Family Systems, Reiki, Being-With-Suffering and Motivational Interviewing. The underlying passion for all these trainings was finding to bring the concept and practice of Healing Presence to healthcare providers. In 2013, she started a 6-month training for UTMB medical students called the Physician Healer Scholarly Concentration. MBSR is a cornerstone the two-month immersion experience for the over 350 students that have enrolled in this training. This program has been adapted for faculty, residents and for Physical Therapy students at UTMB.
Since 2008, she has participated annually in month-long silent retreats in the Zen tradition at Furnace Mountain Zen Center and in 2016 was recognized as a Zen teacher and given the name Jun Je Son Sa. For the past 6 years she has led or co-led weekend retreats either in the Zen tradition or in mindfulness practice.

Ruth Lerman, MD
Medical Director Beaumont Center for Mindfulness
Internist Specializing in Breast Health and Disease
Certified MBSR Teacher Trainer
I grew up in Detroit neighborhoods selected by my parents for their mix of Jewish, Black and other cultural identities. I am the second of a rollicking sibship of five that was and is, challenging, stimulating, educational, aggravating, appreciative and caring. I knew by age six that I wanted to be, “a lady-doctor and a ballerina on my day off.” Moving my body was a need and a joy expressed through swimming, dancing, hiking, cycling, canoeing, horseback riding, and skiing. A love of teaching manifested as I tried to pass along my passions in my roles as big sister, camp counselor and would-be pet trainer.
I’m a proud graduate of Cass Technical High School, a premier Detroit public school. During my first year at University of Michigan, I worked Saturday nights on the assembly line at the Ford Rouge Complex building Mustang IIs. The summer after my Junior year I fell in love while working at Detroit Memorial Hospital. He was an older man (by two and a half years) and ready to get married. While I didn’t think anyone got married anymore, I was smitten and agreed. Forty-three years later, I can say that it was the best decision of my life.
Between marriage, medicine, and soon thereafter, motherhood, I found myself living “the Full Catastrophe” in all its intensity. In 1994, my first breast cancer slowed me down for a bit but it took a worse breast cancer in 1999 to really make me pause. And it wasn’t just the cancer, in the subsequent year: the oldest of my three children fell seriously ill; my dad (my mentor in medicine) died; my job was eliminated; and we had to move out of our house due to renovations gone awry.
It was hard to live what happened next and impossible to summarize it other than to say, I gave up, I got help and I began again.
That early joy of moving my body and maybe the ballerina dream manifested in learning yoga and cycling lots of miles with friends. The love of teaching pulled me into yoga teacher training and teaching yoga to breast cancer survivors. I discovered MBSR and learned to practice this too. The surgeons who had treated me hired me to practice alongside them, as an internist specializing in breast health and disease.
Little by little I grew as a student, teacher and researcher of mindfulness, including Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. I developed and lead the Beaumont Center for Mindfulness (BCFM) which offers evidence-based mindfulness training for all adults including mixed populations of patients, health care workers and families. The BCFM is represented by a lion, symbolizing the characteristics of Courage, Compassion, Clarity and Community and in memory of Aryeh, my eldest child. His name means lion. He died in 2010. His memory is a blessing. My practice is dedicated to him and to all who suffer. May we all give up, get help and begin again.

Katie Morales, MS
MS in neuroscience, Mayo Clinic
Certified to Teach Introducing Mindfulness & Qualified Level 1 MBSR instructor
Project Manager, Mindfulness and Health Institute
Katie takes great pride in her role as the inaugural full-time staff member of the Mindfulness and Health Institute (MHI). Her multifaceted role within MHI is marked by its adaptability, as she consistently aligns her efforts to cater to the ever-evolving demands of both the organization and its participants. Her enthusiasm stems from the opportunity to advance mindfulness initiatives and enhance MHI’s positive impact on public health. She accomplishes this by working toward the MBSR teacher training certification, continuously deepening her understanding of mindfulness through coursework and retreats, driving project development and execution, enhancing the organization’s online presence, and providing customer support. You may see Katie at Information Sessions, leading a free Community Session, or teaching the 3-week Introducing Mindfulness course.
Katie’s early career focused on researching the neurobiology of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases at Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, Indiana University, and the University of Kansas (KU). Katie’s dedication and enthusiasm for the brain also earned her multiple grants and awards, including the recognition as a McNair Research Scholar at KU as well as an Initiative for Maximizing Student Development Research Scholar at both KU and Mayo Clinic.
Katie’s transition out of neuroscience and into mindfulness began in graduate school. While pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, she encountered the challenges of burnout. Though she had experimented with mindfulness in the previous decade through yoga, outdoor activities, and formal sitting practices, she had never consistently practiced it. Nevertheless, Katie turned to mindfulness to navigate the difficult decision of pivoting away from a research-focused career. Gratefully, this transition opened doors to meaningful roles within startup companies focused on promoting mindfulness and mental well-being.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Katie finds joy in her 8-year-old corgi, Chloe, and her true sense of vitality emerges in nature, where she engages in activities that keep her fully present, such as hiking, backpacking, skiing, kayaking, and swimming.
